Sometimes You Have to Make Unpopular Decisions as a Small Business Owner

Most people want to be liked and to be friends with other people, if possible.  This is fine for your social life, but as an entrepreneur, sometimes you will have to make unpopular or controversial decisions.  Sometimes these decisions will cause certain people or constituencies to not “like” you.  As long as you are treating people fairly and you can look in the mirror, you shouldn’t let the controversial nature of the “right” decision keep you from making it.  The ability to be decisive is a very important characteristic in an entrepreneur.  Without decisions and subsequent actions, nothing gets done, which is anathema to the entrepreneur.  Make sure your decisions are well thought out, then let them fly, and follow them up with focused action in order to ensure they have the intended effect.  If you are confident that you are making the right moves, don’t be overly-focused on what other people will think about you or the decisions you make.
