Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.
___________
Hellen Keller

This quote provides us with great wisdom from one of the most inspirational characters of modern history, Hellen Keller, who overcame deafness and blindness to make meaningful contributions to society. As her quote points out, it is not possible to accomplish anything meaningful, to overcome any difficult obstacle, without hope and confidence. In entrepreneurship, as in the rest of life, it does not serve us to come at challenges with a negative attitude. We must learn and hardwire into our brains that hope, optimism and confidence are fundamental ingredients in the world of achievers.

Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.
_____________
George Sheehan

In order to follow the advice of this quote, you first must have a sense of “the person you believe you were meant to be.” Who do you believe you were meant to be? What were you meant to accomplish? Many of us have not taken the time to contemplate these questions. The answer for most will be multi-dimensional, dealing with many aspects of life. Give it some thought. Once you’ve arrived at a conclusion to these very personal questions, heed the advice of this quote and be courageous and determined to become that person you think you were “meant to be”. Don’t settle for less.

Singleness of purpose is one of the chief essentials for success in life, no matter what may be one’s aim.
________________
John D. Rockefeller

As the famous 19th and early 20th century oil magnate points out here, it is extremely important to be focused. In fact, the term “singleness of purpose” implies something beyond focus; we must first have a sense of purpose and then be laser-focused on that purpose. Since we typically have to deal with many aspects of life, not just our business ventures, I would add to this quote that it is important to be focused on the particular venture or other issue you are working on at a particular moment — give it everything you have. Eliminate unimportant distractions and pursue your objectives with a “singleness of purpose”.

For entrepreneurs, energy and passion are not necessarily correlated (positively or negatively) to age.  During my time interacting with entrepreneurs, I’ve met a number of “duds” that are quite young and I’ve met a number of “firecrackers” that are quite old.  In my estimation, the main difference between these groups is the amount of passion they have for what they do; their energy level derives from inside, from how fired up they are about the business they are in.  The main lesson here is not to use age (either young or old) as an excuse for lack of energy or sub-par performance.  Find a business that you believe in, that makes you eager to get out of bed in the morning, and you’ll be amazed by the almost endless supply of energy you can tap into.  The other lesson is to not be fooled by what you see on the surface; age can be very deceptive in terms of utility, capability, enthusiasm, knowledge and passion..
